“HOPE” (TRIPTYCH) WOMB FOR THE RICH AND CELEBRITIES Curatorial explanation

The Meaning of ‘Hope’

From the triptych: Surrogate Mother for the Rich and Celebrities

Hope (Altruism and empathy)

Many surrogate mothers are driven by the desire to do something “great.” They see the pain of unwanted childlessness and want to use their own fertility to fulfill that hope.

The sense of purpose: The satisfaction of fulfilling a wish that seemed impossible to the prospective parents gives them a sense of self-worth and purpose.

The bond with the parents: Often, a deep, almost sacred bond develops between the surrogate mother and the prospective parents during the process.

While “hope” highlights the end result, the inner world and aspects of both often remain out of the spotlight:

1. Hope (Altruism and empathy).

2. The Child as Abstraction:

The ‘Gaping Hole’
In the world of the elite, a baby can sometimes degenerate into an ‘order’: a carefully constructed ideal image.

Fear of Imperfection:

The absence of a face represents the fear of the unknown.

In a world of appearances, is there really room for a child with a physical or mental condition?

The gap symbolizes the enormous pressure on a “healthy outcome”.

3. The Fragility of the Contract: The Placenta Sheets:

The sheets in the work are more than biological material; they represent the paper-thin boundary between success and loss.

Contract of Flesh and Blood: The sheets resemble parchment contracts. This depicts the bitter tension: what if the ‘delivery’ does not meet the requirements? Here, legal reality clashes head-on with biological vulnerability.

4. The Inevitable Bond:

The placenta is the only physical connection. By portraying this in a raw and threatening manner, you demonstrate that this bond cannot simply be erased by a financial transaction.

5. The Paradox of the ‘Golden Cage’:

A sharp contrast emerges between the clinical perfection of an ultrasound and the messy reality of nature.

Sterile Hope vs. Raw Biology:
The ultrasound represents the control of the wealthy, while the fleshy membranes reveal the risky reality of the surrogate mother.

6. The Break of the Miscarriage:

In this context, a miscarriage is not only a personal trauma but also a systemic error.

It destroys the entire carefully constructed construct of money, hope, and PR in one fell swoop, leaving both the surrogate mother and the intended parents in a deep void.

7. The ‘Empty’ Mother: Empathy as Sacrifice:

The artwork highlights the dark side of the surrogate mother’s altruism.

8. The Body as Gift:

She makes her own body (the skin) and the future of a child (the face) available to another.

9. The Void:

The work poses the penetrating question: what remains of the surrogate mother herself when the pregnancy ends — whether through a successful birth or the fate of a miscarriage?

Here, the triptych touches upon a complex and topical societal theme: the tension between the altruistic (love and hope) and the business-like (money) within surrogacy and foster parenting.

These are just a few of the celebrities who had a child through surrogacy, who welcomed and cared for them with love.
Privileged children who are fortunate enough to grow up in wealth.
Privileged to have a home, social security, and good food. Medical care and the best opportunities for a good education.
Children who are given the best opportunities at home to build their lives in a protected environment.

My artwork is an ode to these surrogate mothers.

Whether they did it out of a desire to give new life ( 1 HOPE ) , to fulfill the wishes of the future parents (2 JOY ), or for the money ( 3 MONEY ) remains an unspoken secret, which I have all incorporated into the artworks.
