BLACK GAPS ON WHITE WALLS
A monumental posthumous tribute to neglect of African-American artists, unequal historical relationship of black artists, and the broader subject of racial blackness.
Western art museums are currently catching up with a ”mea culpa”.
Considering re-evaluating our history while acknowledging examples of racism and sexism from our past.
The trustees are discussing the strictness of criteria.
Quality, originality, ethnic background, talent, art historical point of view, colonial guilt?
In major American and Western museums, white male art is represented well above 75 percent (2018).
Women are also included outside the ethnic minorities.
These museums only recently included racial blackness.
And of course they don’t find Black Picasso or similar. But the developments outside the well-known white artists are certainly no less interesting.
This is particularly exciting after the second decade of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Only after the Moma’s exploration did the eyes open to the beauty, the style, the story of these black modern and contemporary artists.
Western museums and collectors have been stammering to turn their attention to contemporary black artists, actually through Andy Warhol’s protégé Basquiat.
Among Others: Blackness at MoMA* helped open the way for the others.
